Interview: Tiga

Interview: Tiga
How has your year been so far? Do you like touring like a dog?

It's been an 8.5 out of 10. Touring like a dog is actually not so bad; you dont really have to think about anything, you just show up and play records. It’s the re-entry into normal life that can be tricky. In general I do like touring, because I love room service.

Have you played any cities for the first time? What gigs have been the best?

2009 first-timers included Shanghai, which felt a bit like playing a party for Brit ex-pat bankers, Djakarta, which was amazing, Singapore (great), Lima (not so great) and Detroit (awesome). Best gigs for me were Melt! festival outside Berlin, Detroit DEMF, Leeds and I think the Montreal Ciao! launch. My memory is pretty loose, so I might be completely forgetting an entire tour. Oh yeah, Sydney Parklife show was fantastic.

Ever sent a tweet and then regretted it?

It's crazy you ask that because last night I actually had a DREAM that I send a tweet saying that some girl was fat, and then also making fun of her husband, and in my dream I was hacking the mainframe to somehow "clear history" and reverse time. In real life no although I once went on a bit of a rant about dwarves that could possibly have been misconstrued.

Why do you think a fan dressed you up as one of the Queen’s guards?

Combination of having quite a bit of time on their hands, having fantastic taste in music and realizing that a man looks great in uniform.

If you had to wear fancy dress as it’s Hallowe’en next Sat what would you wear and why?

I would dress up as my manager: black leather boots, quality dress shirt in a pale mauve with collar WIDE open, designer jeans, leather jacket, blackberry AND Nokia.

Now the dust has settled what is your fave track on Ciao and why?

First let me open i-tunes so I can REMEMBER the tracks on Ciao. Actually scratch that, I’ll go to my bookshelf and look at the SIGNED Paolo Maldini copy (that’s right Paolo Maldini!!!!). The one that KEEPS growing on me is Sex O'clock. Just because I love the funk, the real funk. But if I could only save one from a burning building it’s still Gentle Giant or LDDHA.

The recent tour of Oz sounded fun. What were the highlights?

It was fun. Highlight was living life like a 14 year old stoner at summer camp: me, Erol (Alkan), Joakim, (Busy P) Pedro, Aeroplane. Sitting on park benches, having cop "lookouts". Musically I was really impressed with Aeroplane and had a lot of fun with everybody. It’s quite rare to have that much time together, after a few days everyones’ shells cracks (except mine) and people are just like kids hanging out. Sadly we never made it to a group studio and the football match organized by Lady Soverign was the highlight I think.

Are you looking forward to seeing Miike Snow at Matter?

Yes, very much. I love the singles (although fucking Animal was stuck in my head like the theme from Pink Panther). I missed them by about an hour at Osheaga festival in Montreal, heard great things, and love the music.

We don’t know much about Sei A and Rebolledo who are on the bill at Matter so can you big ‘em up?

Sei A is one of the most talented techno guys I've heard in a long time: reminds me of early Alex Smoke, or great old Soma stuff but with a more vocal, melodic side. He really does not screw up, every track he sends us is amazing, and I have big plans for him. So refreshing to hear quality techno that works on so many levels. Rebolledo is part of that Matias Aguayo/Comeme crew, I was blown away by his tracks and a mix CD I heard, and in general am in love with his sound. To me, it's REAL party music. The best of all worlds.

What is coming up at Turbo towers? What artists are exciting you at the moment?

New ZZT in the pipeline, Proxy as always is the best, new Chromeo in the works, and they are really hitting their stride, loads of great mixes of my own Ciao tracks (Sex O’ Clock done by Trevor Jackson, Jamie Lidell and Aguayo), Overtime done by Brodinski and some remixes so dope I cant even talk about it yet. Mike Mind, a local Montrealler is amazing, a sick acid record by Bodo Elsel on vinyl only release and a BOMB by everyone’s fave Riton.

What’s in Tiga’s future? (seeing as you have someone whose eyes you can look into to see what it holds)?

I am going to India for a few months to chill out and prepare mentally for the storm of activity that will be 2010: start new album, new ZZT project single and hopefully album, remixes for Boys Noize, The XX and others, Turbo Tower construction and new studio (no joke), developing the podcasts, a massive Turbo Tour for summer 2010, and my first real mix CD in years. Oh God, too much. When I look in my eyes I can't believe I still care so much. I can't believe I still dream of techno, I can't believe I still make lists... but I do. 2010 is going to be four times better than 2009.
