Edits, evolution and expecting the unexpected with Solomun

Edits, evolution and expecting the unexpected with Solomun

Solomun is a rare commodity in 2012 - a DJ and producer very much with his own identity. So much so, in fact, his Diynamic label (now past its 50th release) has singlehandedly put Hamburg house on the map, as well as helping to carve out careers for the lines of Stimming and H.O.S.H. Expect the man to play looped, tech-y house with weirded-out and idiosyncratic percussive detail, real instrumentation and all in a variety of shades from deep to jacking. The Croatian plays along side the likes of M A N I K, Noze, Derrick May and more on July 9th at The Coronet, London, so we caught up with him for more….

How’s things? How has your year been so far? What’s kept you busy?

Our last weeks have been very exiting and kept us really busy: we organised our “ego open air” in Hamburg and worked on our charity compilation which includes several new tracks by our Artists and remixed stuff by other great Artists we always wanted to work with and we could won for this project. So we are quite busy right now

Has your style and tastes evolved much in the last year would you say?

I think it does everyday. You experience new stuff from day to day and that’s what an artist relays with his tracks... Combining your roots with the new music you love.

Now Diynamic is 50 releases old has the vision changed over the years?

Yes and no. On one hand we still are the family we always have been since the early beginnings. But it grew with the years and so do our label and sub label 2DIY4.  On the other hand are we trying to make everything possible in our sense of music.

Can we expect another album from you any time soon?

Just keep in touch with the news from our label DIYNAMIC and you will know early enough.

What are your rules on edits and sampling – when is it ok, when is it not?

You should be able to show your own style no matter with or without samples. If that succeeded then it is more than ok.  The Edit thing is only a fun side to have your own special tracks for dj'ing.

Is there any tune you think can never be touched or is anything fair game?

As an amateur I would try to do everything possible, just to get to know your own borders and styles. If it is bad you will notice early enough (laughs)

What should people expect at Unleash?

Expect the unexpected. New Night, New Game!

How do parties in London compare with the rest of the world? Are they different from country to country?

To be the host of a party in a country you don’t live in is a big experience. London has got a club culture with a diversity rarely available some where else.

What else you got coming up?

I’m playing with my Diynamic entourage the whole season at Sankeys on Ibiza. From middle of July till mid September we will be there every Tuesday night. It is a new big challenge for us.

What do you like to do outside of music?

Relaxing especially. To do nothing is the main concept.
